An unusual week. QQQ was up 5.2% on Monday, down 3.4% on Tuesday, up 4.2% on Wednesday, down 3.2% on Thursday, and down another 1.8% on Friday. Finally for the week QQQ was up 1.0%. The Federal Reserve Board dropped the interest rates to stimulate business and the Coronavirus is negatively impacting business. I am afraid the Coronoavirus may be the stronger influence for a while.

28 February 2020

Not a good week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 918, 781, and now -343 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 94, 03, and now 00.

In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 9% below its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 7% below its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 11% below its 50 day moving average,
QQQ is above its 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is negative.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

It was an interesting week as the market sold off every day. The ETFs I owned (except for PTNQ) were all previously sold or sold this week as the share price of the ETF declined. The slow down in the economy is probably due to the coronavirus. The latest news on that indicates the economy will continue to decline. As the economy declines, the market will decline also.

There are ETFs which go up as the market goes down.
SH is the inverse of SPY and is 10% above its 50 day average.
PSQ is the inverse of QQQ and is 6% above its 50 day average.
RWM is the inverse of IWM and is 12% above its 50 day average.
There are even ETFs that go up (or down) 3 times faster than an index. SQQQ is triple short QQQ ETF and is up 37% the last 5 days. ETFSCREEN.COM reports on over 2000 ETFs.

Last week PTNQ (which follows the NASDAQ 100 index ) was 16% above the its 200 day moving average. After this week’s decline price decline and the increase in the 200 day moving average it is 4% above its moving average. It is programmed to start switching to US Treasury bills when the NASDAQ 100 crosses its 200 day moving average.

Not a good week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 763, 918, and now 781 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 02, 94, and now 03.

In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 2% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 5% above its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 1% above its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ, and IWM are above their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

This weekend the Bloomberg Wall Street Week show reported on a University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Survey on where the market is going. They reported that every time over the last 15 years the value increased to above 60% there was a market correction of 10% to 47%. The latest reading of ~66% is higher than the index was at the in 2007.
Currently QQQ is 16% above its 200 day moving average. PTNQ, which follows the same index, is programed to switch to Treasury bills when the current value of the index crosses its 200 day moving average. If that were to happen Monday, any PTNQ investor would lose ~16% but any QQQ investor would loose as much as the index fell.
Select Gold is the number one fund this week. That in an indication of concern in the market. It may be because of the Coronavirus impact on the global supply chain so many companies use these days. It is difficult for Chinese companies to run factories when the workers are confined to their homes.

A good week, a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 521, 763, and now 918 – up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 01, 02, and now 94.

In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 4% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 8% above its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 2% below its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ, and IWM are above their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Time to buy – Sum of all deviations is up 2 weeks in a row.

The top 5 Fidelity funds based on a 3 month return as of 31Dec earned -2.48% in January based on 31Jan Fidelity list. However you cannot invest until the list is available. I invested in the 5 funds as soon as the 31Dec list was available, my gain was 1.42% as of 10Feb when the next list was available. On 10Feb I invested in the new list of the top 5 Fidelity funds based on a 3 month return. Both SBiotechnology and SPharmaceuticals were on both lists, gaining 2.8% and 1.7% in January.

The market seems to have evaluated the coronavirus impact on world business and it is not good. The closing of cities in China, businesses, and restrictions on travel has impacted business world wide. This may be the black swan which ends the current bull market.
PTNQ is still 12% above its 200 day moving average at which point it will start converting to T-Bill investments. It is even 3% above its 50 day moving average. It is also down 3% from its peak price which was on 01/24.

As I’ve mentioned before, PTNQ is my favorite long time investment. It is one of the 7 Pacer Trendpilot funds offered by Pacer ETFs (https://www.paceretfs.com/), all of which automatically start to move out of the market when the price of the index they follow crosses the 200 day moving average of the index. They do it internally so there is no buy and sell reporting to the ETF owner. PTNQ follows the Nasdaq 100 index. Another ETF which follows the same index is QQQ – but QQQ always is fully invested in the index – up or down. Currently QQQ is 15% above its 200 day moving average which indicates if the Nasdaq 100 falls about 15% QQQ will remain fully invested while PTNQ will start to change its portfolio to US T-Bills.

17 January 2020

A good week, a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 822, 868, and now 1004 – up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 09, 08, and now 60.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 5% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 7% above its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 4% above its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ, and IWM are above their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
A time to buy – Sum of all deviations is up 2 weeks in a row.

Tom McClellan of McClellan Financial Publications sends out a email with a free chart each week of that he thinks is interesting. On 1/17 his chart was “SPY Number of Shares Outstanding Continuing to Rise.” “This week’s chart shows an interesting representation of bullish trader sentiment. The number of SPY shares outstanding is above its upper 50-1 Bollinger Band, and continuing to rise. Check out the other instances when this indicator has gone above that upper 50-1 band. You will notice that all of them in this chart except one (12/19) were associated with meaningful tops leading to noticeable corrections.”

10 January 2020

A good week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 882, 822, and now 868 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 57, 09, and now 08.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 3% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 6% above its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 2% above its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ, and IWM are above their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

It is sure looking like 1999 all over again. The ETFs representing the DJIA – DIA, S&P500 – SPY, Nasdaq100 – QQQ, all hit new highs on 09Jan. They all did it before during the week of 30Mar00 and then went down for ~18 months.
The Fidelity mutual fund short term performance numbers for December were finally published by Fidelity on 08Jan. Both the top 5 and 10 funds over 3 month identified on the November report gained 4.1% for the month. However the performance numbers Fidelity published are for the calendar month but the fund list is not published at month end.
Therefore I invested $1000 in each of the top 5 funds from the end of November report. The funds were:
FBIOX – SBiotechnology,
FSHCX – SHealthCareServices,
FSPHX – SHealthCare,
FSELX – SSemiconductors,
FPHAX – SPharmaceuticals.
If this investments proves to be as profitable as my analyis, it will be a way anyone can get the data, and I can eliminate my analysis.
