Each week I get a copy 0f The Felder Report, sent free from www.thefeldreport.com. This week he reported some of the indicators which are of concern. They do not present a positive picture. The first four are: 1. The S&P500 median price to sales ratio – a record. 2. Bond yields are current lower than inflation – first time in 30 years. 3. Corporate America is now more leveraged than ever. 4. Junk bonds officially haved entered “Bubble” territory.

IBD TBP’s Market Pulse is “Confirmed uptrend” as of 21Sep. Time to invest if it stays this way for the next week. Personally I do not believe it will, but will invest next weekend IF it remains the same.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2

Gary Kaltbaum has a web site, garyk.com, with various investment ideas and a daily radio show called Investors Edge. The show is live at 6pm each night on various radio stations and BizTalk app. It is available later on a podcast, on the BizTalk as a podcast, on twitter where a tweeter called Stoolander tweets the show without commercials (37 minutes), and on his web site garykaltbaum.com. He has always indicated without the financial sector (not doing well) and the semiconductor sector (doing well) the market will not do well. He indicated that if the S&P500, currently at 2139 and below its 50 day moving average, falls to 2119 the market could be in trouble. The 200 day average is 2058. The rule of thumb is good things MAY happen if the market is below the 50 day moving average and will NOT happen if the it falls below the 200 day moving average.

IBD TBP’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend Under Pressure” as of 09Sep. NOT a time to invest. I am surprised that it had not moved to market in correction.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2
SMedicalEquipment&Sytems has a price of 42.81, a sell price of 41.02, a rank of 02, and is a hold. (ETF – IHI current stoploss 135.25)
IRA#2
LatinAmerica has a price of 20.67, a sell price 20.73, a rank of 12, and is a SELL. (ETF – BRF – stopped out on 9/13)
SElectronics has a price of 89.07, a sell price 84.62, a rank of 01, and is a hold. ( ETF – SMH – current stoploss 62.14)
SNaturalGas has a price of 25.08, a sell price 24.95, a rank of 36, and is a hold for now. (ETF – PSCE – stopped out on 9/13)
The problem with selling LatinAmerica which I am doing this weekend is that I have not owned it for 90 days and Fidelity will charge me a 1.5% fee since I have not held it for 90 days. I have no idea if it is going up or down in the future, but this last week it fell by 2.4%, the previous week it lost 1.9%.

My portfolio changes this weekend:
IRA #1 – None
IRA #2 – Sell LatinAmerica

My portfolio market exposure after this weekend’s changes:

09 September 2016

On the New Wall Street Week guest Joe Grano said he expected a 10-20% decline coming in the future. After Joe, the program had two financial advisers who both had suggestions as to were you should invested to survive the decline if it came. I find it interesting. Listening to most stock market advisers there are “up markets” and “volatile markets.” Personally I plan to sell and hide in a money market fund when the “volatile market” arrives.

I have always enjoyed George Will. In this video he discusses two failing bureaucracies – the US government and US univesities. Please note that in the video he referenced the housing mortgage bubble – which the US government caused – and crash of 2007/8 and points out we now have an even bigger college loan bubble. I sort of wonder how we can expect any graduate with a large student loan who finally finds job will be able to buy thing to help the economy grow. We have governed, educated, and loaned the US into a no growth future unless the college load bubble crashes and then who knows. https://www.youtube.com/embed/Vfl4BGbMxoQ

SNaturalGas has a price of 26.01, a sell price 24.95, a rank of 09, and is a hold. (ETF – PSCE – current stoploss 16.71)
I was surprised that there were no sale prices hit. September is the worst market month during the average year. October is the month when the market turns up. However there are two interesting cycles. The first year of the presidential cycle is generally the worst of the 4 years. The two year presidential cycle says sell on the presidential election day and buy 2 yeas later during the congressional election.

In the Doug Fabian’s 26Aug “ETF Strategies” podcast, he listed 10 ETFs to own. For long term growth he suggests: OUNZ VanEck Merk Gold Trust, SLV iShares Silver Trust, ECON EGShares Emerging Markets Consumer ETF, INDY iShares India 50, and IHI iShares US Medical Devices. For income he suggests: REM iShares Mortgage Real Estate Capped – 10% yield, OUSA O’Shares FTSE US Quality Dividend ETF – 2% yield, CVY Guggenheim Multi-Asset Income ETF – 5% yield, EDIV SPDR S&P Emerging Markets Dividend ETF – 5% yield, and DWIN PowerShares DWA Tact Multi-Asst Inc – 4% yield. I have been and currently am invested in some of these.

Last week the Federal Reserve Board (FED) held its annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Included in the discussion was the FED purchases of US stocks, and using negative interest rates – the FED denies any intent to do either. Japan, Israel, Switzerland, Czech Republic, China and 23% of all nations are purchasing their countries stocks. Jim Grant, founder of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer, notes that in the last 5000 years there has been no instance of negative rates and yet today $12T of government bonds from Japan, France, Germany, and others, have negative interest rates. He asks “If these are the first sub-zero interest rates in 5,000 years, is this the worst economy since 3,000 BC?” The purpose of these actions is to convince the public the economy is fine since the market are going up. It is difficult to figure out how this can end well.

19 August 2016

A lot has changed since I proudly wore the uniform of the United States Army. http://militarymoneymanual.com/ is a web site run by a young Air Force officer covering the monetary aspects of military life and how he plans to be financially independent by age 40. There is also an analysis of the new retirement system to which he will be switching and why many current military members should switch also. The new plan seems to be better than the “complete 20 years or get nothing” plan of my Army era.

And just in case you feel safe with your governmental pension, review this analysis http://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-your-states-public-pension-plan-is-in-a-much-bigger-hole-than-you-already-fear-2016-08-16? The zero percent interest rate (now 0.25%) of the Federal Reserve Board (FED) is killing pension plans as well as wiping out all savings accounts. It is interesting that last December when the FED raised it’s interest rate was from 0 to 0.25% the stock market fell 10% until the head of the FED called her counterparts on 11&12 Feb requesting they print more money to rescue the stock market. All that matters to the FED is the stock market.

Each Thursday on Chuck Jaffee’s The MoneyLife Radio Program podcast a segment by Tom Lydon editor of ETF Trends is featured. Mr. Lydon presents the ETF of the week. On 18 Aug he featured NOBL, ProShares S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF. This ETF focuses exclusively on companies in the S&P 500 that have grown dividends for at least 25 consecutive years and has outperformed the S&P 500 with lower volatility since its inception. Over the last 5 years the S&P 500 ETF SPY is up 25% while this ETF is up 33%. Mr. Lydon suggests you can hold it forever or use the 200 day moving average to decide when to sell. The current price is 55.69 and the 200 day moving average is 51.24.

Each Thursday on Chuck Jaffee’s The MoneyLife Radio Program podcast a segment by Tom Lydon of ETF Trends is featured. Mr. Lydon presents the ETF of the week. On 11 Aug he featured LMHI, Legg Mason International Low Volatility High Income ETF. It is a new ETF which Mr Lydon thinks has a good future.

Doug Fabian in his 12Aug podcast indicates the next 10 weeks are generally an extremely volatile time in the market. He does not agree with all the experts who claim you should sell everything but says you should be watching your investments carefully. He uses the 200 day moving average of the S&P500 to determine when to sell.

IBD TBP’s Market Pulse is “Confirmed Uptrend”. Time to invest. Thursday the DJIA, S&P500, and the Nasdaq all closed at an all time high. The last time that appeared was December of 1999 – the following year was not a good year.

Note from Monday’s 8/1/16 email from Gary Kaltbaum. http://garykaltbaum.com/another-investment-bank-bearish/. I hope the investment banks are wrong. If you sign up at his web site, gary.com, he will send you a daily market related email.

Each Thursday on Chuck Jaffee’s The MoneyLife Radio Program podcast a segment by Tom Lydon of ETF Trends is featured. Mr. Lydon presents the ETF of the week. On 04 Aug he featured EMB, an emerging markets bond fund denominated in dollars which has a 4.7% yield and he feels has the possibility of growth. He suggests you hold it until the price is exceed by the ETF’s 200 day moving average price but he expects it to be a long term hold.

Consuelo Mack has a PBS show (and website and podcast) called WealthTrack. As part of her 05 August show she talks with Stephen Cucchiaro who claims looking at past markets to figure out the future does not work this time. There have never been a time when 35% of world government bonds have negative yields. He also says the Federal Reserve Board and it’s increasing interest rates in December resulted in the ~15% market decline at the start of 2016. His best investment idea for now is Japan, but for a long term investment he likes
India. There are ~40 Japanese ETFs and ~12 India ETFs.

In the 27 July podcast from Dorsey Wright and Associates (DWA), # 556, Tom Dorsey indicates if the charts are correct the DJIA price objective this time between 20350 to 21700 – depending on the size of the boxes used in the chart. Dorsey and his firm are into Point and Figure Charting exclusively. About 20 of DWA’s momentum models are used as basis of ETFs. Some of the ETFs are PIZ,PIE,DWLV,PYZ,PEZ,PSL,PXI,PFI,PTH,PRN,PTF,PUI PDP,DWAQ,DWAS,DWTR,DWIN,DWAT,FV,and IFV.

29 July 2016

Consuelo Mack has a PBS show (and website and podcast) called WealthTrack. As part of her 22 July show she talks with Jonathan Clements discussing his new book “How to Think About Money.” He indicates if you want more happiness then 1. concentrate on your spending, 2. college graduates should try to make money first in order to have enough wealth to eventually do what makes you happy, and 3. be extremely frugal. He points you have to plan on 70 years as an adult. His one investment to hold forever is VWO – Vanguard FSTE Emerging Markets ETF.

If you have, or expect a private pension (such as mine from United Technologies) you may want to read an article at http://www.moneyandmarkets.com/bankrupting-pensions-one-basis-point-time-80616 . It states “But the era of ultra-low rates is bankrupting pensions, …”

Yes it is the end of July, but I am slow in completing this report.
Returns for the month of June were mostly positive.
In June IRA#1 6%, IRA#2 6%, PDP PIE PIZ DWAS -2%, QQQ -6%, SPY/RSP -5%, DWTR 3%.
For the last 3 months, IRA#1 22%, IRS#2 9%, PDPetc -1%, QQQ -5%, SPY/RSP -3%, DWTR 5%.
For the last 6 months, IRA#1 16%, IRS#2 5%, PDPetc -0%, QQQ -2%, SPY/RSP 1%, DWTR 2%.
June portfolio changes:
IRA#1 – None – Invested in FSMEX
IRA#2 – Purchased FSAGX 6/13 – Invested in FIUIX, FJSCX, FRESX, FSMEX, FSAGX
PDP PIE PIX DWAS – Sold PIZ 6/14, PIE 6/27 – Invested in PDP, cash
QQQ – Sold QQQ 6/27 – Invested in cash
SPY/RSP – Sold RSP 6/27 – Invested in cash
DWTR – None – Invested in DWTR
When the market declined in June a couple of stoploss orders were executed. The ETF portfolios were updated with a 7% stoploss daily, while the mutual fund accounts were updated with a sell price of 5% weekly. Thus the ETFs are much more susceptible to daily fluctuations.
DWTR – PowerShares DWA Tactical Sector Rotation Portfolio is an ETF which invests in up to 4 of the best performing 9 ETFs which are managed based on sector performance and may invest in cash if the ETFs sector performance is poor. DWTR evaluates the 9 sector ETFs monthly based on relative strength to remain invested in the best 4. Currently DWTR is invested in PowerShares DWA Momentum Portfolios PYZ – Basic Materials, PSL – Consumer Staples, PUI – Utilites, and PTF – Technology. Stocks in each sector ETF are changed quarterly based on the relative strength of stocks within the appropriate sector.

22 July 2016

Consuelo Mack has a PBS show (and website and podcast) called WealthTrack. At the start of the show on 15July she quotes from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” with the Cheshire cat telling Alice “We are all mad here” and Alice saying “It would so nice if something made sense for a change”.  Ms. Mack then goes on to interview Brugere-Trelat and Trennert on the long-term consequences of Brexit. The two investment managers have some interesting opinions and suggestions for investments.
