30 June 2017

Not a good week. Last week only 2 out of the 100 funds I follow were a buy. This week not one fund is a buy. The market is up big, down big, and repeat. That is not the movement of an up trend market. We are at the end of this trend and the next trend maybe an up trend for non technology stocks, or a downtrend. The market may go up, continue flopping around, or go down. I sure do not know. Just make sure you are ready to sell if your investments drop too much. This week SSemiconductors is a sell and my corresponding ETF SMH was stopped out with a gain on Wednesday.

Weekly I get an email from StockCharts.com called Trend Check with Tusher Chande. His latest email indicates the current trend is still up in spite of some short term down trends. Also at StockCharts.com is a blog called DecisionPoint which reports some negative short term trends.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 92.68, 50 day MA of 91.81, a 200 day MA of 87.74, and a 7% stop loss is 86.92. RSP has gone no where during the month of June

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend Under Pressure” – not a time to invest.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2 – STechnology has a price of 161.26, a sell price 160.59, a rank of 03, and is a hold. ( ETF – CQQQ – current stoploss 44.34 )

23 June 2017

So this was a good week after a couple of not so good weeks. I am ready to buy something except for the last check I use. The sum of all the deviations of all the funds I follow is not up for last two weeks.

There are two funds I would buy if I was buying: SMedicalEquipment&Systems and SHealthCare. These are the only two funds of the 100 I follow which are a buy. My guess is the companies and investors in those funds are confident the new health care bill passing or not will make them money, perhaps the know some inside information. Or perhaps they know the lobbyists have purchased enough representatives. I wrote one of my senators this week. I pointed out that in the 6+ years he has been in office the national debt has gone up 46% which I identified as one of his failures.

In January 2000, AOL (the tech giant at that time) decided to buy Time Warner. AOL’s goal use technology to make Time Warner a more profitable business. Within a year after that merger, the market croaked. This last week Amazon purchased Whole Foods. Maybe trying to use online purchased to make Whole Foods a more profitable business. Not that the two mergers and the market decline have anything in common, but…

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 92.68, 50 day MA of 91.53, a 200 day MA of 87.46, and a 7% stop loss is 86.92

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Confirmed Uptrend” – time to invest.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2 – STechnology has a price of 166.66, a sell price 160.59, a rank of 02, and is a hold. ( ETF – CQQQ – current stoploss 44.23)
IRA#2
SSemiconductors has a price of 105.53, a sell price 103.81, a rank of 17, and is a hold. ( ETF – SMH – current stoploss 82.83)
SComputers has a price of 86.21, a sell price 84.05, a rank of of 33, and will be sold when there is another fund to buy. (ETF – PSI – sold)
SLeasure has a price of 161.10, a sell price 156.63, a rank of 10, and is a hold. (ETF – IBUY – stoploss not allowed)
OTCPortfolio has a price of 102.74, a sell price 100.42, a rank of 03, and is a hold. (ETF – MTUM – stoploss 84.43)
00% Cash in IRA#01 and IRA#2.
PSI was sold when the stoploss price was hit. I ended up with a gain of 11% and the current price is lower than my sell price, so for now it looks like it was a good idea to sell.

16 June 2017

Not a good week, sort of a not so bad week. I am surprised that none of the funds showed a requirement to sell. SComputers closed the week $0.01 over its sell price. Ever fund I own showed a price decline for the last week. Two of the ETFs I own were automatically sold when the price dipped intraday on Monday.

09 June 2017

It was an interesting week, generally up, except while the DJIA was up on Friday, the NASDAQ took a hit. Since most of my investments are more correlated to the NASDAQ most were down on Friday. Nothing passed a sell price, but remember, most summers are poor markets – “sell in May and go away.”

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 92.88, 50 day MA of 91.32, a 200 day MA of 87.28, and a 7% stop loss is 86.50. Over the last 3 months SPY, the capitalization weighted S&P500 index ETF, has done about 30% better than RSP, the equal weighted index S&P500 index ETF, which indicates the big market leaders are holding the index up, while the smaller stock are not doing as well. It was reported this week that three of the stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are producing half the gain that 30 stock index has had this year. It is not a good sign when the average stock is not doing as well as the higher capitalization stocks.

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend under pressure” – NOT a time to invest. Computer chip makers took some of the biggest hits Friday, but IBD goes on to point out it happened before on 01Dec, 21Mar, and 28Apr and each time the group resumed its rise.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2 – STechnology has a price of 169.04, a sell price 160.59, a rank of 01, and is a hold. ( ETF – CQQQ – current stoploss 43.96 )

SSemiconductors has a price of 109.27, a sell price 103.81, a rank of 02, and is a hold. ( ETF – SMH – current stoploss 82.83)
SComputers has a price of 87.48, a sell price 84.05, a rank of of 17, and is a hold (ETF – PSI – current stoploss 44.24)
SLeasure has a price of 162.38, a sell price 156.63, a rank of 04, and is a hold. (ETF – IBUY – stoploss not allowed)
OTCPortfolio has a price of 104.92, a sell price 99.67, a rank of 03, and is a hold. (ETF – MTUM – stoploss 84.05)

02 June 2017

I am excessively late in producing this report. I had to go up to Orlando to help Mickey run the World. It is the rainy season in Orlando and the heavy rains started both Friday and Saturday nights about 7PM.

Driving home Sunday I listened to the 06/01 MacroVoices podcast. Their feeling is that the market will go much higher, which makes no logical sense since the market is very over valued. However, this is what a late stage bull market looks like – a lot of hysteria. This is the beginning of a blow off top. One of the other items I learned was that the oil the US produces cannot be refined in the US because it is extremely light crude oil and none of US refineries can refine it. It has to be mixed with heavy crude oil from somewhere before it can be refined. The guest points out that we are in an oil glut for a couple of years and since we are discovering less and less new oil each year, when the glut ends, the price of oil will significantly increase and negatively impact all world economies.

If you have not registered (free) with MacroVoices.com you should. Their weekly report is fantastic and you do not even have to listen to their podcast.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 93.01, 50 day MA of 91.06, a 200 day MA of 87.05, and a 7% stop loss is 86.50. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average.

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Confirmed Uptrend” – Time to invest. Except I am almost fully invested with little cash left to buy anything.

My current investments:

26 May 2017

A good week. The market is setting new highs after the big drop on 17 May. There were 66 new annual highs on the Nasdaq and 35 new lows on Friday. Not everything is going up but the ratio looks good.

Last week I indicated QQQ had been my best investment for the last 12 months. ETFSCREEN.COM provides performance statistics on almost all ETFs. As of today they report QQQ has been up 30% over the last 12 months. However if you had invested in QLD which leverages the QQQ to produce double the return of QQQ and QLD was up 65%. With even more risk, TQQQ – triple QQQ leveraged return – was up 107%. A new ETF UP has been approved by the SEC, but is being held up the those who offer the TQQQ who fear a loss of business, this UP ETF would be four times the leverage of the QQQ and along with it would ETF DOWN – leveraged four times QQQ short. Even now there is a short QQQ called PSQ – 1 year -25%, Short QLD called QID – 1 year -43% and short TQQQ called SQQQ down 58%. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-sec-etfs-idUSKBN17Z009

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 92.01, 50 day MA of 90.89, a 200 day MA of 86.87, and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. 19 May 2017

Not a good week. Not a really bad week. After the loss on Wednesday, I figured it was going to be down more on Thursday and Friday. It was not. Nothing I own fell below its sell line or stoploss.

Returns for April IRA#1 0%, IRA#2 -1%, QQQ 3%, SPY/RSP 1%, DWTR 0%
For the last 3 months, IRA#1 -3%, IRA#2 3%, QQQ 9%, SPY/RSP 4%, DWTR -4%
For the last 6 months, IRA#1 4%, IRA#2 9%, QQQ 16%, SPY/RSP 12%, DWTR -2%
For the last 12 months, IRA#1 3%, IRA#2 13%, QQQ 24%, SPY/RSP -5%, DWTR 6%
April portfolio changes:
IRA#1 – None, Invested 100% in cash
IRA#2 – Sold FBIOX on 04/11 – Invested 20% in FSELX, 20% in FDCPX 60% in cash
QQQ – None – Invested 100% in QQQ
SPY/RSP – None – Invested 100% in RSP
DWTR – None – Invested 100% in cash
A quick review of the numbers for the 1, 3, 6, & 12 months indicate QQQ is my best investment. QQQ is an ETF which owns the largest 100 stocks on the NASDAQ. The portfolio assets contains Apple 12%, Microsoft 8%, Amazon 7%, Facebook 5%, Alphabet 5%, etc. The portfolio is updated daily at www.invesco.com/portal/site/us/financial-professional/etfs/product-detail?productId=QQQ. An investment last July when the price of QQQ moved above the 50 day moving and the 200 day moving average would have gained 25% as of today. Fidelity has a similar fund, Nasdaq Composite index – FNCMX – would be up 22%. The 3% difference are the fees.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 90.97, 50 day MA of 90.80, a 200 day MA of 86.64 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average.

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend under pressure” as of 17May. Not a time to invest.

12 May 2017

Last week I screwed up. I did not provide the correct weekly numbers. The investment I made was still a valid selection although Nordic was a slightly better choice. The “Last Week” numbers this week are the correct numbers for last week.

This week 25 Fidelity Funds has distributions. Not only were the distribution not listed, they were not included in the fund’s detailed information. I called Fidelity once when the distribution list was not correct. I called Fidelity a second time when the fund’s detailed information was not correct. They agreed there were problems and they would report it. I told them it was the third time this year I’ve called and last December, after the first week, the numbers were never correct.

The 29Apr podcast of Consuelo Mack’s show, Wealthtrack, featured two personal retirement specialists. They had some interesting ideas including a couple of “rules” which are no longer correct. 1. The percentage of stock should be 100 minus your age with the rest in bonds. 2. Expect to take 4% per year out of your retirement assets for living expenses.

Another podcast which is great is MacroVoices. It is generally quite deep but very complete, informative, and educational. On the May 4th podcast Steve Keen indicate the current market is as massive overvalued as it was in 1929 but not quite as much as it was in 1999 – the only times the market has been this much overvalued before. Professor Keen indicates the future of the US economy is will be like the Japanese economy after 1990 due to the way the economy is being run by DC. On 1/1/1990, the Nikkei 225 index was at ~39,000. Now 27 years later the index is back to ~20,000 – unadjusted for inflation. And the economy of Japan as had the same rough ride. We can all thank DC for providing us with this same future.

MacroVoices on 11Mar had an interview with Dr. Lacy Hunt. Basically he said the same thing Steve Keen said the previous week. He covered a lot of history on how countries got out of excessive debt and at no time was going into more debt successful. The MacroVoices Research Roundup email each week contains details of the podcast and a large amount of additional, interesting research.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 91.14, 50 day MA of 90.77, a 200 day MA of 86.43 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average. When it fell below it’s 50 average twice within the last 30 days, I considered selling, but it had not fallen below the 7% stop loss.

InestorsBusincssDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend Resumed” as of 24Apr. Time to invest so I am investing (and updating my sell prices).

OTCPortfolio has a price of 100.42, a sell price 65.40, a rank of 04, and is a Buy. (ETF – MTUM – stoploss TBD)

I called Fidelity to find out why I could not enter a stoploss for IBUY – they were not sure but thought that maybe it was not traded on a regular exchange.

05 May 2017

This was a rather good week. On the latest Investor’s Edge radio show with Gary Kaltbaum he suggested that about 40% of all stocks were headed down but listed several stocks everyone should put on their watch list. You can listen to the show every evening at 6PM on biztalkradio.com, the biztalkradio app, and on radio 1010AM Tampa (and other places). Later you can hear the archives at garyk.com, the biztalkradio.com, the biztalkradio app, or on twitter (search for spoolander). Take notes on stocks to watch and sectors to avoid.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 91.85, 50 day MA of 90.74, a 200 day MA of 86.31 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. Chuck Jaffe produces a daily podcast called MoneyLife. On his 4/20 podcast, Tom Lydon of ETFTrends.com featured GLDJ – VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF – as his ETF of the week. Lydon is a long term investor, who uses the 200 day moving average to manage trades. Following him on the podcast was Jeff Bishop of TopStockPicks.com and RagingBull.com. Bishop uses leveraged ETFs to make very short them trades. He is triple short GDXJ by owning JDST. For GDXJ, JNUG is the triple long ETF (down 32% in the last month) and JDST is the triple short ETF (up 37% in the last month). Interesting different view of junior gold minor stocks based of your intended length of holding the investment.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 91.42, 50 day MA of 90.68, a 200 day MA of 85.99 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average.

IBD TBP’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend Resumed” as of 24Apr. Time to invest. I really think this is just a bounce in a market headed down after a Trump bump. Remember the first year on presidential terms is generally a bad year. However I do not argue with the numbers so I am going to buy.
