- One of the advantages of being retired military is being able to stay on base and at military facilities at reduced rates. We have stayed at the Hale Koa Hotel AFRC at Waikiki (www.halekoa.com), Kilauea Military Camp JSRC in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (www.kmc-volcano.com), The New Sanno US NJSA in Tokyo (www.thenewsanno.com) (see Flynn in Japan above), Trumbo Point Annex MWR Vacation Rentals at the Key West Naval Air Station (305-293-5000) (several visits), Patrick Air Force Base in FL (1-888-235-6343), and the VIP quarters and Singing Pine Cabins on Lake Tholocco at Fort Rucker, AL. We have visited and stayed Shades of Green (SOG) (www.shadesofgreen.org) at Walt Disney World – check their website, at various times they offer discounts and even veterans can stay on various dates. At the ticket store in SOG you can purchase discounted Disney and other attractions tickets.
- If you are military, or retired military, I strongly suggest you subscribe to R&R Travel News available from www.militaryliving.com. I wrote the story of our trip to Key West for R&R Travel News back in June 2010 and they published it. Then in January 2012 they put it on their website. I copied it and added it to my website – www.flynndj.com/Key West NAS.htm. The articles in R&R Travel News include many reports on military travel and lodging including Space-A. They also publish several publications we have used to assist us in locating military places to stay.
- BTW Disney (and other attraction) tickets are sold by MWR ITT Orlando just outside the NEX in Orlando – just west of the airport – and they are about as good a deal as you can find. If you email mwrorl@aol.com and ask for an attractions price list, they will send one to you and you will find many discounts – call before you go to make sure they are not out of the tickets you want to buy! The Disney tickets from here are about the same price Disney employees can get with their discount. The MWR ITT site at your closest military base probably has tickets also. In June 2010, I purchased some Disney tickets at the MWR ITT site at the Key West Naval Air Station.
