An OK week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 493, 708, and now 652 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 62, 54, and now 38.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 2% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 2% above its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 1% above its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ and IWM are above their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

I sent a copy of this webinar archive to many people this week so this may be a duplicate. Anyway, if you, friends, parents, kids, relatives, etc. have an IRA, changes are coming when tax rates change and IRAs are inherited. Based on what James says, it is the insurance companies which are pushing it so they can sell more annuities. Anyway some of his tax saving suggestions are based on current tax rates which possibly will end in two or six years. James has an interesting story on when he converted his traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. In ’98 he was running his Pittsburgh CPA income tax preparation business on the second floor above a pizza shop. In February the pizza shop caught fire and burned the building down. He and his wife decided with a lower income that year to convert all their IRAs to Roths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut1i9cxpTXI

Last week I received a message from IBD – Investors Business Daily – on 5 stocks to watch. Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA) lead five top stocks to watch this week working on shallow bases as the stock market uptrend takes a breather. Cadence Design Systems (CDNS), TransDigm (TDG) and Estee Lauder (EL) round out the top five. During the week CDNS was up 5.4%, TDG was up 5.2%, CMCSA was up 3.0%, EL was up 2.5%, and Disney was down 1.0%. Friday IBD’s Stock of the day was RPD – the stock of the day is free on their web site – www.investors.com.

Not a bad week, not a great week. The sum of all the deviations has been 081, 479, and now 483 – up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 00, 08, and now 62.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 1% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 1% below its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 2% below its 50 day moving average,
QQQ and IWM are below their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
A time to buy – Sum of all deviations is up 2 weeks in a row if only barely.

You should listen to MacroVoices All-Star #17 posted 14Jun19 which featured Danielle DiMartino Booth. She discussed last weeks Federal Reserve Board week long meeting in Chicago. As part of that session they changed the words “zero lower bound” with “effective lower bound” so that they can make negative interest rates (like Japan and the EU) and not violate any of their rules. There were also other terms changed to help hide their actions. Also interesting is that the first paper presented said that if the FED had cut rates from 5+% to -5% during the last crisis the the impact on the economy would have mitigated. They are setting the stage for a real downturn. Negative interest rates will cause cash hoarding (resulting government penalties) which may kill the financial system. Think of what that will do to your pension, bank account, etc.

07 June 2019

Not a good week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 263, 081, and now 479 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 06, 00, and now 08.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 0% above its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 1% below its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 2% below its 50 day moving average,
IWM is still below their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

So in January the Federal Reserve Board decided to quit raising interest rates and the market quit going down. This week the FED suggested they would reduce interest rates and the market quit going down. One of these days the FED will try it again and it will not work. There is also something to worry about when the economy is at a peak and the FED cannot raise rates without killing the market.

There is an interesting article in Seeking Alpha – https://seekingalpha.com/article/4269235-gold-surges-near-breakout. Several reports I heard claim that when gold finally closes at a new bull market high (>$1,365) it will be time to buy. SGold fund from Fidelity is performing well also.

Fidelity is back to not reporting fund distributions the weekend they occur. 5 of the funds I follow had a distribution, but it was not reported on the list of all YTD distribution. So when they get around to reporting them the results could be some minor changes in the relative fund rankings.

Not a good week, not a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 381, 263, and now 81 – not up 2 weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 03, 06, and now 00.
In reviewing some of the market indicators:
SPY (S&P500 ETF) is 4% below its 50 day moving average,
QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF) is 5% below its 50 day moving average,
IWM (Russell 2000 ETF) is 6% below its 50 day moving average,
SPY, QQQ, and IWM are all below their 200 day moving average.
The sum of the deviations is positive.
Not a time to buy – Sum of all deviations is not up 2 weeks in a row.

Clark Howard produces a podcast (and radio show) on various consumer related items. His web site is clark.com. On the 5/23 podcast last week, he discussed the Bumped cell phone app. It gives you a little stock every time you shop with a credit card at one of the stores in your profile. It is not a lot of stock – maybe 1% of your purchase amount. This rebate in stock does not replace any on the credit card rebates you may be getting. I am wait-listed on their site until they decide to accept more members. His web site has many suggestions including a list of credit card which provide 2% cash back. Last week I mentioned I had a small investment in – GBTC – Grayscale Bitcoin Trust. It turns out I checked on the price and noticed I had gone down more than 5% on Friday so I sold it. I purchased it on 5/13 and sold on 5/31. So I held it for 18 days and gained 17%. I intend to watch it and may buy it again. It is not an investment I recommend.
