30 March 2018

A good week, not a buy week yet. The sum of all the deviations has been 654, 140, and now 284 – definitely not up two weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 01, 00, and now 00.
It sure would be nice it the market went up more than one week in a row.
We are soon to enter the seasonally weak part of the market year, know as “sell in May and go away.”

This last week was a window dressing week. If you are a fund manager with 10M in cash and 1M of xyz stock, you can take that 10M and buy more xyz (even if you do not like it) and push the price up on every share you own. Thus you look like a better fund manager.

In a recent WealthTrack podcast Consula Mack’s guest pointed out that 2017 was the only year in history in which the market is up every month and suggested you buy a treasury strip – a zero coupon bond type investment. Two of the ETFs which invest this way are EDV, and ZROZ. They have not had a good history but are looking good over the last month.

February returns for IRA#1 -6%, IRA#2 -4%, QQQ -6%, SPY/RSP -7%
For the last 3 months, IRA#1 -1%, IRA#2 -1%, QQQ 3%, SPY/RSP -2%
For the last 6 months, IRA#1 7%, IRA#2 3%, QQQ 9%, SPY/RSP 5%
For the last 12 months, IRA#1 13%, IRA#2 6%, QQQ 23%, SPY/RSP 8%
portfolio changes:
IRA#1 – Sold FSLEX(Feb13) – Invested 100% in cash
IRA#2 – Sold FSLEX(Feb12), FPEMX(Feb13)  – Invested in FSRPX, FSLBX, FEMEX, & 40% in cash
QQQ –  Sold QQQ(Feb07) – Invested 100% in cash
SPY/RSP – Sold RSP(Feb07) – Invested 100% in cash.
It is a little late to be looking at the bad February, but in review, February just basically wiped out the Dec, and Jan gains. The funds were sold based on the standard 5% weekly loss numbers and the ETFs on a 7% stop loss.

23 March 2018

Not a good week, a sell week. The sum of all the deviations has been 799, 654, and now 140 – definitely not up two weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 02, 01, and now 00.

MacroVoices featured Jeffery Snider on Thursday’s podcast. He feels this is the most challenging market since the 1930s. After the interview, the sponsors, Erik Townsend and Patrick Ceresna, discussed a few possible scenarios. They suggested that after the equity market rebounds from a test of the Feb low, a short squeeze in the bond market will send interest rates down, causing new all time highs in the equity market. Then the bond short squeeze ends, interest rates will rebound, scaring equities, and the equity bear market will begin long about September. Just one view. But many feel we are just in a long rounding market top.
I am currently 3.44% invested and the rest in cash. I do not know the market direction, but it does not look like up to me.

EmergingEuropeMiddleEastAfrica is only $0.03 above its sell like. It is not a quite a sell yet.

A good week, almost a buy week. The sum of all the deviations has been 728, 499, and now 799 – still not up two weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 61, 01, and now 02.
I continue to be invested in only 2 Fidelity funds waiting for what seems to be the end of this downturn. I am not ready to invest yet – maybe next week end.

With a US budget deficit of 3b per day, we are now accumulating 1T per year in additional debt. The head of the fed says he is not worried about the budget deficit or the national debt. Remember excessive debt cause the 08/09 market crash.
Jim Grant, editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer, was on MacroVoices 08Mar18. He points out that in the 5000 year history of the world, there have never been negative interest rates like the world had in 2016. Bonds are destined to move lower as interest rates move up. His favorite investment is gold and gold stocks.
Bill Miller was a guest on the 03Mar18 issue of The Investors Podcast. He is one of the greatest money managers ever. He is short bonds and continues to add to that position. He uses moving averages to validate his investment decision. He feels stocks will go up this year as long as interest rates only increase slowly. He thinks any market pull back is a buying opportunity.

02 March 2018

Not a good week, not a time to buy. The sum of all the deviations has been 297, 728, and now 499 – still not up two weeks in a row.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 00, 61, and now 01.
I continue to be invested in only 3 Fidelity funds (2 after Monday). All my ETFs were stopped out early in February. Until I get a buy week, I intend to remain in cash.

Consuelo Mack’s Wealthtrack show on 16 Feb featured Robert Kessler. Kessler points out that treasury bonds are yielding more than the S&P500. His one investment for the future is to buy and hold long term treasury strips (also known as a zero coupon treasury bond). He points out that over the last ~10 years the Fed has caused the market to go up by been printing money by buying securities (quantitative easing) and lowering interest rates. Now they are selling securities (quantitative tightening) and raising interest rates. A secure, inexpensive way to buy US treasury bonds is at Treasurydirect.gov. Investments start at $100 and mature in several days to 30 years depending on your purchase. No broker, no sales charge.

I received a couple of emails over the last few weeks.
I think my deviations numbers have been correct, but may have entered some based on some wrong day quotes from Fidelity. This week the quotes were correct but the distributions not listed – none of the funds I follow.
Macrovoices.com is the web site where they presented an analysis of the current down trend overlayed with the charts of several previous corrections – sort of a W looking trend. Hopefully the last up leg will start soon.
