29 December 2017

A not a good week, not a sell week, but a not a good week. Not a time to buy. The sum of all the deviations has been 763, 826, and now 798.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 12, 42, and now 19.
Fidelity had distributions every day this week – the only distribution list posted was for Thursday. However there were only 15 funds I follow which had distributions.

I chose to invest in SSemiconductors last week and thus it went down. It lost $0.47 or about 0.4% since I purchased it. Hopefully that will not continue.
I also put in the incorrect symbol for the ETF I was purchasing. The correct symbol is ARKW. It turns out that it went down also. I lost about 1.6% since I purchased it.
An interesting item is that if you get a Fidelity quote on ARKW and on the quote page click on more information, it says it had a return of capital distribution on 12/29 of 20.62. I called Fidelity because on another page it says there was a distribution of 0.944 none of which was return of capital. The Fidelity rep said he had no idea where that 20.62 number came from. Sort of requires one to check everything.

22 December 2017

A good week, not a great week, but a good week. Time to buy. The sum of all the deviations has been 762, 763, and now 826.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 19, 12, and now 42.
Fidelity had no distributions this week – thus there was no distribution list to screw up.
After updating for the distributions (after Fidelity finally published them) for last week’s numbers, none of the rankings changed for the top 20 funds.

The new tax law which takes place next year was passed and signed. James Lange produced a good review at http://paytaxeslater.com/yearendreport/. It will be interesting to see the impact on personal taxes. Since unreimbursed employee business expenses, as well as any other miscellaneous itemized deductions, are no longer allowed, I am going to lose some deductions.

It was an interesting week for GBTC – Bitcoin Investment Trust. I purchased a couple of shares on 11/27 and sold it on 12/08 for a gain of 26.6% after I heard futures the next Monday which included the possibility of shorts. When it did not drop, I purchased a couple of shares on 12/11 and on 12/21 when heard it was dropping like a rock, I sold for a 0.7% gain. It fell another 2.3% on 12/21 but gained 12.3% on 12/22. An interesting investment to watch.

15 December 2017

A not a very good week, not a bad week. Time to do nothing. The sum of all the deviations has been 784, 762, and now 763.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 43, 19, and now 12.
When Fidelity finally published their complete distribution list, I updated my last week numbers. There were same minor rank changes but none it the top 20.
This week Fidelity had 100+ funds with distributions, many of which I follow. Like last week, their distribution list was not updated, so I looked up the distributions the top 30 funds from last week and used Fidelity’s year end estimate for the others. I will correct the listings during the week when Fidelity gets its act together.

This week the evening radio show I listen to, Gary Kaltbaum, said Chinese, technology, and growth stocks are done for now. The leaders for the next market move will be transportation, finance, and housing. He may be right.

There is an old market adage “Buy on the rumor, sell on the news.” So the market has been going up pending a tax cut, it will soon pass, and become law or the Republicans may snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (as they seem to do) and it will not become law. Either way it could be a bad coming month. In January 2016 the DIA, SPY, and QQQ (ETFs for the DJIA, S&P500, and Nasdaq 100) all fell by 10, 11, and 12 percent between 29Dec and 20Jan. The market never really started to go up until Janet Yellen, our chairman of the Federal Reserve board, called the heads of the EU and Japanese national banks and asked them to start printing more money.

All in all I’m looking forward to a tax cut and have written and called my representatives telling them if they vote against my tax cut, I will vote against them. I think the government takes too much in taxes now and will feel the same if/when the tax cut is passed. The problem our government has is too much spending.

08 December 2017

A not a very good week, time to sell anything which fell below my sell price. The sum of all the deviations has been 816, 784, and now 756.
The number of funds I rate as a buy over the last 3 weeks has been 36, 43, and now 19.
All in all the rotation of technology out of the list of market leaders will result is a sell.

80 Fidelity(F) funds had a distribution this weekend. The 80 funds included 42 of the funds I follow. True to the incompleteness of F numbers, the distributions were not reported. In fact (I called F on this) the fund prices they listed on 12/08 were from 12/07 and yet the gain or loss from 12/07 to 12/08 was correct. Talk about screwed up prices. The distributions were not even included in the fund details. The F representative said that was generally updated in a couple of days. I told him I’ve been dealing with F since before select funds and it has never been a couple of days. I also pointed out that prices without distributions listed somewhere was crap data. Saturday afternoon the fund details had been updated so I went to the info for each of the top 30 funds from last week to get the correct data. I used the year end estimated data for the other funds. I will correct the estimated number during the week.

It bothered me that there was no capital gain distribution for ChinaRegion since it was just barely a sell. So I called F and the rep assured me there was a $0.50 capital gain distribution and thus ChinaRegion was not a sell. However I did not trust the representative when I noticed in the fund details the fund had a capital gain distribution of $0.50 for 2016. So I called F again and the rep did some detailed checking and assured me the previous rep was wrong. Thus ChinaRegion remained a sell.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2 – STechnology has a price of 177.82, a sell price 178.31, a rank of 16, and is a SELL. (ETF – CQQQ – stopped out)

EmergingMarketsIndex – IC has a price of 10.93, a sell price 10.78, and a rank of 43, and is a hold for now. (ETF – EEMO) (sell price adjusted for a distribution)

01 December 2017

A not a very good week, not a time to buy or sell anything yet. The sum of all the deviations has been 712, 816, and now 784.
The number of funds I rate as buy over the last 3 weeks has been 09, 36, and now 43.
The week was sure an up and down ride for market prices. One ETF which is interesting is DDN which is a double Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF. While the DIA (DJIA ETF) is up 27.57%, DDM (double DJIA ETF) is up 58.42% since 12/01/16. I purchased a little DDM on 10/23 and it up 7.87% since then. I wish I could do that every 5 weeks. I am using a 50day moving average as a stoploss for my DDM purchase.

25 Fidelity funds had a distribution this week, including 9 I follow. Again, the list of the latest Fidelity fund distribution was not updated. On Friday the distribution were not even listed on the individual fund information page. I called Fidelity and the representative was extremely helpful and gave me all the total distributions for the funds I needed. He was obviously a customer service representative and provided good service. I missed one fund and called again. This representative told me they were all listed on the web site and I disagreed. He then gave me the one distribution I had missed. I again pointed out that having a fund price without a distribution is incomplete data. He indicated that I had told him that before and the conversation ended quickly. He was obviously a broker and not a customer service representative. In the past I have called and just not entered my userid because then I always get a customer service representative who is interested in helping me rather than a broker who is just trying to get rid of me asap.

My current investments:
IRA#1 and IRA#2 – STechnology has a price of 178.89, a sell price 178.31, a rank of 05, and is a hold. (ETF – CQQQ – stopped out)**
IRA#2
SSemiconductors has a price of 112.28, a sell price 111.83, a rank of of 01, and is a hold. (ETF – PSI – stopped out)**
ChinaRegion has a price of 34.80, a sell price 34.65, a rank of 11, and is a hold. (ETF – CXSE – stopped out)
EmergingMarketsIndex – IC has a price of 11.17, a sell price 10.97, and a rank of 43, and is a hold for now. (ETF – EEMO)
** both STechnology and SSemiconductors had a large distribution and the sell price has been adjusted to reflect that distribution.
As I’ve mention before, I have all fund distributions taken in cash rather than reinvested. My feeling is that when a fund has a distribution, I may or may not still want to invest in that fund at that time.
I purchased CQQQ on 05/01 and stopped out on 11/29 for a return of 39.96%.
I purchased PSI on 10/09 and stopped out on 11/29 for a return of -1.31%.
I purchased CXSE on 10/16 and stopped out on 11/30 for a return of 1.30%.
All three were stopped out based on a 7% stoploss. I have no idea if these ETFs are going up in the future but if they do, I can always buy them again.
I am going evaluate the 50day moving average stoploss and see if that is better than my 7%. Since most web sites will give you the 50day moving average, there is no calculations required.

My mutual fund portfolio changes this weekend:

IRA #2 – None

My mutual fund portfolio market exposure after this weekend’s changes:
