26 May 2017

A good week. The market is setting new highs after the big drop on 17 May. There were 66 new annual highs on the Nasdaq and 35 new lows on Friday. Not everything is going up but the ratio looks good.

Last week I indicated QQQ had been my best investment for the last 12 months. ETFSCREEN.COM provides performance statistics on almost all ETFs. As of today they report QQQ has been up 30% over the last 12 months. However if you had invested in QLD which leverages the QQQ to produce double the return of QQQ and QLD was up 65%. With even more risk, TQQQ – triple QQQ leveraged return – was up 107%. A new ETF UP has been approved by the SEC, but is being held up the those who offer the TQQQ who fear a loss of business, this UP ETF would be four times the leverage of the QQQ and along with it would ETF DOWN – leveraged four times QQQ short. Even now there is a short QQQ called PSQ – 1 year -25%, Short QLD called QID – 1 year -43% and short TQQQ called SQQQ down 58%. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-sec-etfs-idUSKBN17Z009

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 92.01, 50 day MA of 90.89, a 200 day MA of 86.87, and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average.

InestorsBusinessDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Confirmed Uptrend” – Time to invest. Except I am almost fully invested with little cash left to buy anything.

Not a good week. Not a really bad week. After the loss on Wednesday, I figured it was going to be down more on Thursday and Friday. It was not. Nothing I own fell below its sell line or stoploss.

Returns for April IRA#1 0%, IRA#2 -1%, QQQ 3%, SPY/RSP 1%, DWTR 0%
For the last 3 months, IRA#1 -3%, IRA#2 3%, QQQ 9%, SPY/RSP 4%, DWTR -4%
For the last 6 months, IRA#1 4%, IRA#2 9%, QQQ 16%, SPY/RSP 12%, DWTR -2%
For the last 12 months, IRA#1 3%, IRA#2 13%, QQQ 24%, SPY/RSP -5%, DWTR 6%
April portfolio changes:
IRA#1 – None, Invested 100% in cash
IRA#2 – Sold FBIOX on 04/11 – Invested 20% in FSELX, 20% in FDCPX 60% in cash
QQQ – None – Invested 100% in QQQ
SPY/RSP – None – Invested 100% in RSP
DWTR – None – Invested 100% in cash
A quick review of the numbers for the 1, 3, 6, & 12 months indicate QQQ is my best investment. QQQ is an ETF which owns the largest 100 stocks on the NASDAQ. The portfolio assets contains Apple 12%, Microsoft 8%, Amazon 7%, Facebook 5%, Alphabet 5%, etc. The portfolio is updated daily at www.invesco.com/portal/site/us/financial-professional/etfs/product-detail?productId=QQQ. An investment last July when the price of QQQ moved above the 50 day moving and the 200 day moving average would have gained 25% as of today. Fidelity has a similar fund, Nasdaq Composite index – FNCMX – would be up 22%. The 3% difference are the fees.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 90.97, 50 day MA of 90.80, a 200 day MA of 86.64 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average.

Last week I screwed up. I did not provide the correct weekly numbers. The investment I made was still a valid selection although Nordic was a slightly better choice. The “Last Week” numbers this week are the correct numbers for last week.

This week 25 Fidelity Funds has distributions. Not only were the distribution not listed, they were not included in the fund’s detailed information. I called Fidelity once when the distribution list was not correct. I called Fidelity a second time when the fund’s detailed information was not correct. They agreed there were problems and they would report it. I told them it was the third time this year I’ve called and last December, after the first week, the numbers were never correct.

The 29Apr podcast of Consuelo Mack’s show, Wealthtrack, featured two personal retirement specialists. They had some interesting ideas including a couple of “rules” which are no longer correct. 1. The percentage of stock should be 100 minus your age with the rest in bonds. 2. Expect to take 4% per year out of your retirement assets for living expenses.

Another podcast which is great is MacroVoices. It is generally quite deep but very complete, informative, and educational. On the May 4th podcast Steve Keen indicate the current market is as massive overvalued as it was in 1929 but not quite as much as it was in 1999 – the only times the market has been this much overvalued before. Professor Keen indicates the future of the US economy is will be like the Japanese economy after 1990 due to the way the economy is being run by DC. On 1/1/1990, the Nikkei 225 index was at ~39,000. Now 27 years later the index is back to ~20,000 – unadjusted for inflation. And the economy of Japan as had the same rough ride. We can all thank DC for providing us with this same future.

MacroVoices on 11Mar had an interview with Dr. Lacy Hunt. Basically he said the same thing Steve Keen said the previous week. He covered a lot of history on how countries got out of excessive debt and at no time was going into more debt successful. The MacroVoices Research Roundup email each week contains details of the podcast and a large amount of additional, interesting research.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 91.14, 50 day MA of 90.77, a 200 day MA of 86.43 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. The general rule of thumb is: consider selling when an investment falls below its 50 week average and make sure you own nothing selling below both its 50 and 200 day moving average. When it fell below it’s 50 average twice within the last 30 days, I considered selling, but it had not fallen below the 7% stop loss.

InestorsBusincssDaily TheBigPicture’s Market Pulse is “Uptrend Resumed” as of 24Apr. Time to invest so I am investing (and updating my sell prices).

I called Fidelity to find out why I could not enter a stoploss for IBUY – they were not sure but thought that maybe it was not traded on a regular exchange.

This was a rather good week. On the latest Investor’s Edge radio show with Gary Kaltbaum he suggested that about 40% of all stocks were headed down but listed several stocks everyone should put on their watch list. You can listen to the show every evening at 6PM on biztalkradio.com, the biztalkradio app, and on radio 1010AM Tampa (and other places). Later you can hear the archives at garyk.com, the biztalkradio.com, the biztalkradio app, or on twitter (search for spoolander). Take notes on stocks to watch and sectors to avoid.

My S&P500 is in RSP (SPY EW) which has a price of 91.85, 50 day MA of 90.74, a 200 day MA of 86.31 and a 7% stop loss is 85.81. This is not an investment to buy and hold but then there are no investments to buy and hold. When it fell below it’s 50 average twice within the last 30 days, I considered selling, but it had not fallen below the 7% stop loss.
